GERM400 Advanced German I Sections

Near-native competence and thorough understanding of critical contemporary topics in a limited number of areas fostering study skills. All skills will be fostered but the course focuses on accurate writing and conversation in particular.

GERM402 Words and Music in German Literature (in English) Sections

Study of individual works and genres in which words and music together form a whole. Possible topics include the Lutheran Hymn, the Volkslied, the Romantic Lied and Brecht songs, operas by Mozart, Wagner and Strauss, and music and the musician as a subject in literature. No musical training is necessary to take this course.

GERM406A Selected Topics in German Literature - SEL TPC GERM LIT Sections

A study in depth of one topic of special interest, varying from year to year depending on interests of faculty and students. Possible topics: literature and film, the image of the outside world in German literature, individualism and conformism.

GERM408 Selected Issues in German Culture Sections

In depth study of one topic from German cultural history, varying from year to year. Possible topics: Germany of the New Europe; Gender and nation in German culture; topics from theory, such as the Frankfurt School.

Major themes and methods in German media studies.

GERM433 German for Reading Knowledge I Sections

A multimedia introduction to reading skills in German leading to a second year reading knowledge in just one term. Students are expected to work largely independently. Course restricted to beginners or to students with no more than one term of beginner's German (or equivalent).
