A survey of western European thought, in its social and cultural setting, from Augustine to the fourteenth century. Possible topics include: the interaction of Christianity and paganism; Augustine; Anselm; Abelard and the twelfth-century Renaissance; the influence of Islam; the rediscovery of Aristotle; Aquinas, Scotus; Ockham.
