What did you enjoy or find meaningful about medieval courses at UBC?

The medieval classes I took as part of my Art History degree were some of my favourites. I have always been fascinated by mosaics, illuminated manuscripts and stained glass windows. I am in awe of these mediums and what it took to make them during that time.

I also love how the culture of the medieval era was highlighted through art. It gives us so much insight and understanding into how people lived and what they believed. It’s interesting to compare medieval and modern times and see how much life has changed. Or, in some cases, stayed the same.

What do you like about your current job and how do you think your arts degree at UBC helped you get there?

I knew that I wanted Art History to be the focus of my degree when I entered UBC. But it took many more years to find a path that made me feel like I was utilizing what I’d learned. However, I love to travel and my arts degree has certainly come in handy with that! It has broadened my experiences because I can put what I’m seeing into context. Understanding a place through its art, architecture and history is very rewarding.

My passion for travel led me to begin writing about it. Becoming a travel writer was unexpected because I didn’t love writing essays for my classes! Studying Art History has allowed me to see and experience the world through a different lens. I love seeking out unique spots in the places I visit, particularly if they have an art or cultural angle. It’s my greatest wish that those who read my work not only learn something new, but make unforgettable discoveries on their travels.
